Mexico is the land of the ancient Maya civilisation, and its traces can still be found everywhere today. The country’s biggest tourist attraction is Chichen Itza, the famous Mayan pyramid on the Yucatán Peninsula. It is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The Mayan ruin city of Palenque is equally spectacular, especially as it is nestled within the jungle. In San Cristóbal de las Casas, you’ll find the colourful indigenous market where descendants of the Maya sell handmade clothing and other delightful items. Snorkellers and divers can explore stunning coral reefs in the clear turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea.
Food and Drink
Famous Mexican dishes include tortillas and tacos, filled with chicken, meat, cheese, beans, and vegetables, served with avocado puree (guacamole). Other popular dishes are enchiladas, burritos, and flautas. Along the coast, fresh fish and seafood are common menu items. Corona is Mexico’s most famous beer, but you’ll also find excellent wines, exotic fruit juices, and delicious cocktails made with rum and tequila.
